As regarding the Illinois legislatures attempt to force Impeachment proceedings:
I would hope the Republicans would weasel out of it.

Talk of censure and impeachment, bad for Bush. Bad for Republicans.

Actual impeachment proceedings, good for Bush and good for Republicans.

Because a) They won't actually impeach him short of him driving up to the
House of Representitives with a dead hooker in his limo.

&

b) It gives them an issue where they are being beset by "radical
liberal forces". Republicans have been continuing to trot out
that song and dance despite controlling the media and all three
branches of the Federal government. One of the reasons Republicans
have suffered so much is no one buys that anymore. When things go
bad (Katrina, Iraq, gasoline, corruption) they have no one to
blame for themselves.

I think the average American is fairly leery of impeachment, especially
after the Clinton debacle. While I agree he deserves it, the best way to
do it is to win in 2006. Let Bush and the Republicans flounder in a sea of
corruption, leaks, and bad news. If the Democrats can come up with some
sort of simplified, National positive message (Health Care for all, paid
for by removing the Bush tax cuts for the rich sounds fairly good to me...) then
they have a chance, redistricting or no.
